Minami no Teiō
Replica Artwork Exhibition

June 20 to 25

From June 20 to 25 ,the special exhibition of “Minami no Teiō” will be take place at Rotonda di via Besana.

What is Minami no Teiō?Osaka, Japan’s second biggest city, has long been referred to as the “City of Merchants”. With no history as a political or imperial centre, it developed purely as a mercantile city. Perhaps because of this, the people of Osaka are characterised by an unpretentious practicality and an affable, compassionate nature. However, along with its development as a mercantile city, perhaps due to its concentration of money and business opportunities, it also became a hotbed for crooks trying to profit by any means necessary, including cunning and deception.

The main character of Minami no Teiō ミナミの帝王 (The king of Minami), Manda Ginjirō, makes his livelihood in Osaka's biggest shopping district, Minami, as a private moneylender. He lends money at the exorbitant rate of ten percent every ten days - but whether this is seen as expensive, or as a lifesaver, depends on the customer. In fact, there are many who have been saved from a tight spot thanks to Ginjirō, and he is a very influential figure in Minami. When his customers are in trouble, Ginjirō makes use of his personal connections, legal and financial knowledge, and negotiating abilities to thwart not only the criminals who harass his customers, but also large companies, big banks, and local governments. He is a champion of the weak and needy, and of the common man, and this is why he is referred to as Minami no Teiō.

A defender of justice who fights against the villains who torment the city’s common people, while existing in a legal grey zone; Minami no Teiō has achieved huge success in Japan as a comic aimed at adults.

Artist Profile:

Born in Osaka in 1950, Gō Rikiya郷力也 made his debut at age 16 in the kashihon manga (manga distributed through book rental stores) anthology “Tsuki-yo”. After a period working in the shōjo manga field, at age 21 he shifted to seinen manga, and made his debut again with Nishinari muri shinjū西成無理心中 (Forced double suicide in Nishinari [TN: an Osaka ward known for its slums]). He followed with various gekiga-style works, based around themes such as gambling, and then in 1991, serialisation of Minami no teiō ミナミの帝王 (The king of Minami [TN: an area in central Osaka], story by Ten’nōji Dai天王寺大) began in “Manga Goraku” (Nihon Bungei-sha). In July 2013, it will reach its 1100th serialised chapter, and without a single break in serialisation, it boasts the third longest run out of all of Japan’s story manga.
